From TMDB usersA joyful, colourful celebration of queer culture from a queer perspective, filled with irreverent Australian humour
On a planet of lesbians ruled by her disappointed mothers, "Princess Saira" always ends up in the singles section of their annual celebratory ball. Then she goes and gets herself a girlfriend called "Kiki" and their hopes for their daughter skyrocket. Sadly, though, "Saira" proves a little too intense and girly for her more adventurous pal and so she gets dumped. Meantime in a galaxy far, far, away a trio of white straight "Malien" are desperate to find themselves a chick. They concoct a cunning plan to kidnap "Kiki" - and then use her as bait to lure "Saira" to their planet where they can pinch her labrys - a sort of inner power, only sexier - and then they will end their decades of enforced abstinence. Still totally loved-up, the ill-equipped princess sets off on an intergalactic rescue mission that suggests she's going to be easy pickings for her mighty foes. Or is she? There are a couple of fairly blunt messages here that illustrate just how difficult it can be for a child to emerge from her own chrysalis into a world of expectation from family, friends and even from herself - as well as playfully encouraging us to pity the poor heteros who can't get laid anymore. Along the way, this enjoyably paced animation squeezes in some genuinely funny - if maybe a little crass and certainly very stereotypical - humour that did make me smile and reminded me that this was a typically irreverent and groundbreaking Aussie production. It won't be for everyone, but I did quite enjoy it.
